SEIU 775 represents more than 50,000 long-term care workers providing quality home care, nursing home care, and residential services in Washington, Montana, and Alaska. SEIU 775’s mission is to unite the strength of all caregivers, to create a better life for ourselves and those we care for, and to lead the way to a more just and equitable world.
Over the past few years SEIU 775 has built a powerful statewide movement of in-home caregivers in Alaska, forming the Alaska Caregivers Union SEIU 775. Our union is growing and now represents over 1000 home care workers across the state.
About This Role
Join our growing movement to build union power for low wage care workers in Alaska! Organizers in our Growth (new organizing) Department at SEIU 775 help workers form unions by identifying and developing worker leaders, engaging with workers 1-on-1 and in groups, and mobilizing members & the community to support a pro-worker agenda. This Alaska Organizer position will work to organize new caregiver groups in Alaska and will also do ‘internal organizing’ by working with existing SEIU 775 homecare worker members to ID and recruit leaders, conduct union meetings around the state, work on issue campaigns, contract enforcement, and legislative advocacy. Our Alaska Organizer will join our ongoing work to build a statewide movement of Alaskan Caregivers, while working in coalition with other unions and community groups to support low-wage worker organizing across Alaska in a variety of sectors, regions and throughout our nation.
While the Growth department at SEIU 775 values previous professional organizing experience, we are also willing to hire and train new organizers. Essential Functions:
- Building union power for low wage homecare workers in Alaska
- Increasing member and potential member engagement in all aspects of union work
- Engaging, motivating, and activating worker leaders and member organizers around a vision of union difference
- Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts with both non-union workers and existing membership
- Building one-on-one relationships with workers
- Identifying, recruiting, and developing worker leaders
- Conducting individual and group meetings with workers to move organizing campaigns and legislative priorities forward
- Planning and carrying out effective organizing campaigns
- Mobilizing for actions and events to support worker organizing efforts
- Engaging workers in our fight to promote racial justice and combat white supremacy
- Working with non-union workers to successfully form powerful unions
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Professional experience in union organizing, community-based organizing, or other social justice organizing work (desired but not required!)
- Experience organizing low wage workers and moving groups to collective action (desired but not required)
- Some connection to caregiving, homecare workers, or caring for the elderly or people with disabilities (desired but not required)
- Bilingual fluency a plus
- Demonstrated commitment to social & economic justice efforts (volunteer or professional experience considered)
- Deep commitment to building unions and power for low wage workers in Alaska
- Desire to empower working people to act collectively
- Willingness to conduct work site visits and home visits
- Willingness to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed
- Basic computer literacy and ability to learn necessary technology tools
- A drivers' license, a car, automobile insurance, and a cell phone with regional coverage
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- This is a full-time, exempt position. As a Full-Time, Exempt employee you are not eligible for overtime. Hours of operation will depend on what you and your supervisor agree to. Must have flexibility in schedule during extended business hours allowing stakeholders to access services. From time to time, the Alaksa Growth Organizer may be expected to participate in Union activities outside of normal business hours, including weekends and after-hours.
- This position is based in Anchorage, Alaska. Candidates need to be located or willing to relocate close to Anchorage, Alaska. This position is a hybrid of in-person fieldwork, in-person office work, remote work (work from home), and occasional travel.
- Most of the time will be spent either working remotely or in-person in the Anchorage/Matsu areas, with occasional travel to Kenai, Fairbanks, and other parts of the state. Occasional travel to more remote parts of Alaska will be required. Candidates must have the ability to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as needed. This position will also require occasional travel outside of Alaska.
Compensation:
Providing current or previous salary information is optional and will not be factored into hiring decisions. Prospective Employees covered by the CBA can request a copy of the wage scale, the CBA, and any current relevant MOUs upon application to the position.
This position is full-time, exempt. This position is included in the Bargaining Unit. Pay ranges from $78,778 – $94,148 per year. Benefits include vacation, holiday, and sick leave benefits, fully employer paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance, defined benefit pension plan, and optional 401(k), WFH credit, and more.
Typical Working Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, requirements include:
- Regularly drive a car, operate a computer, a cell phone, and other general office equipment
- Regularly walk from car to member’s home front doors, door to door, or car to meeting locations
- Stand, walk, and sit for hours at a time
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Sometimes travel, work irregular hours to prepare for and attend events or other union activities
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can elevate during events and campaign activities, especially at large worker rallies
- A regular work week is generally 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This job may frequently require more than 8 hours a day, and/or some evening and weekend work hours.
- While most of the work will be performed in and around Anchorage/Matsu areas, this employee will be required to travel for days, weeks or more within Alaska and to WA state. Occasionally this position may be required to travel to other states for campaigns and/or meetings. Travel expenses are all paid.
