Digital Program Director

WHO WE ARE:
The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) engages in paradigm-shifting campaigns that confront corporate misconduct, racism and sexism, and challenges existing anti-worker policy and corporate-friendly law in order to grow union membership throughout the US economy. We do this work in partnership with our affiliated unions and with the broader progressive community in the US and globally. Since our establishment in 2005, we have been mission focused on helping workers and unions organize for power at work. Today, our work is focused on such companies as Amazon, Google, McDonald’s, Uber, and campaigns including the Fight for $15 and Code CWA.

The Strategic Organizing Center is a democratic union federation whose three affiliated unions – the Service Employees International Union, the Communications Workers of America, and the United Farmworkers – represent some 3 million workers. These unions have been leaders of the American labor movement’s efforts to help workers form unions to secure fair pay, benefits, and justice on the job.

WHAT WE DO:
Through cutting-edge research and innovative campaigns, the SOC advocates for workers, consumers and other constituencies harmed by concentrated corporate power across a wide range of industries, including food service, transportation and logistics, communications, healthcare and more.

THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) is seeking a Digital Program Director to support the SOC’s strategic initiatives and business goals by managing the comprehensive digital programs across the organization and is responsible for the development and implementation of high-impact campaigns and all public-facing digital communications. This position will lead a team of communication, digital, video, and social media professionals that will drive content strategy and be the voice of the SOC.

THE WORK:

  • Lead the digital team and oversee all program efforts.
  • Collaborate with SOC departments to design and execute digital initiatives in support of campaigns.
  • Direct creative and effective digital communications that raise the visibility of the SOC and its campaigns.
  • Work with SOC departments to develop creative products in support of research findings and other information for distribution, including editorial design for whitepapers and reports, regulatory filings, charts and data visualizations, shareable graphics for social media campaigns.
  • Use social media, email, online advertising, and other digital tools to develop online organizing and issue-based programs.
  • Stay abreast of labor issues and specific employers to inform digital products and public-facing communications, as needed.
  • Maintain relationships with digital vendors, including data brokers, freelance graphic designers, website developers, and digital campaign consultants to ensure effective, timely and accurate delivery of work in support of campaign initiatives.
  • Advance the use of best practices in digital communications, e.g., metrics, testing, data analysis, and audience listening.

  • Attention to Detail and Accuracy: Thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail when crafting our digital strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS:
While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications below, our ideal candidate would bring:

  • Proficiency in digital communications strategy and tools, including social media platforms, digital media analytics, and platforms.
  • Experience leading a team–managing and supervising staff, delegating assignments, communicating expectations and feedback clearly, and developing individuals.
  • A keen eye for aesthetics, detail, and design trends; able to facilitate creation of final design products. Some graphic design experience a plus.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with an ability to write clear, compelling, and succinct content that effectively frames our messaging to multiple audiences for different platforms, including Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team management skills.
  • Attention to detail and analytical thinking.
  • Ability to thrive in a busy, multi-tasking, and time-pressured environment.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5+ years of experience in digital campaigning, at a labor union or other progressive advocacy organization.
  • 2+ years of experience in developing, managing, and leading a team.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

  • Under current policy, SOC employees spend two days per week in-office and may work remotely otherwise.
  • Some travel required.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required.
  • Weekend and evening monitoring of social media required.

WHAT WE OFFER:
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Compensation:
Salary is calculated based on years of experience, with annual increases according to an established salary scale. The salary range for this position is $109,842 - $120,027. This is a full-time (35-hour work week) exempt position.

Benefits: The SOC offers:

  • 100% employer-paid comprehensive health insurance benefits (medical, dental, vision and prescription benefits) for employees, their spouses or domestic partners, and children.
  • 12% of salary contribution paid by the SOC to a 401K retirement plan after six months of employment.
  • 100% employer paid premiums for life insurance, short- and long-term disability.
  • Other benefits include cell phone provision, Commuter Benefits, and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA),
  • 13 days of accrued sick leave, 14 paid holidays, 10 days of paid vacation (vacation time increases with seniority to up to 25 days per year), 2 personal days and 4 days of compensatory time.
  • 8 weeks of paid parental leave.
  • A commitment to employee growth and advancement, with a $1,000 professional development budget each year for each staff member.

Please Note: SOC staff enjoy a hybrid telework (three days) /in-person (two days) schedule. There are offices in Washington, DC, and New York City. We have a mandatory vaccine policy and safety protocols in our facilities. The SOC is not currently requiring proof of vaccination however, staff are required to fill out the health screening survey in a timely fashion and accurately when they are on site. The only exemptions to this policy provided by the SOC are for medical and religious reasons. All candidates applying for this role will be expected to adhere to these policies.
