Position Overview
The Communications Manager position reports to and works under the direction of the Coalition Coordinator and designated members of the TN4ALL Operations Committee. The focus of the role is supporting TN4ALL leadership with both internal and external communications as well working directly with key coalition stakeholders to provide communications strategy and support.
Key responsibilities include working on a variety of projects geared towards promoting TN4ALL vision and mission, campaigns and priorities to external audiences; working closely with leadership to create and execute communication plans for specific projects; and designing and writing strategic internal communications materials to support the goals and operations of the organization.
Responsibilities
TN4ALL Internal and External Communications (60%)
- Under the direction and in consultation with the Coalition Coordinator and designated member(s) of the TN4ALL Operations Committee, develops and implements a visionary communications strategy for TN4ALL, including comprehensive communications plan(s) for TN4ALL and its initiatives targeted at increasing awareness of TN4ALL.
- Designs and writes strategic communications materials to support the goals and operations of TN4ALL, including various communications internal and external audiences and other materials to increase awareness of TN4ALL initiatives.
- Provides consultative services to TN4ALL leadership regarding communications projects.
- Serves as crisis consultant on matters that have the potential to impact organization outcomes.
- Oversees web and multimedia content creation including production schedule, tracking, and input for and supervision of the creative activities of in-house and outside organizations; ensures that quality guidelines are met, and projects are completed on time.
- Manages the TN4ALL social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram). Develops social media campaigns and tracks monthly analytics; echoes and lifts up content of allies in the TN4ALL coalition
- Copy writes and proofreads marketing materials and writes original stories and promotional materials.
- Travels to support select campaigns, providing media and communications support on the ground.
- Independently gathers, reconciles, and interprets data/information using various techniques and sources; extracts pertinent details.
Partner Support and Technical Assistance (35%)
- Develops positive, long-term relationships with members of the media and TN4ALL- developed community tables through proactive outreach, consultation, and follow-up.
- Drafts and edits toolkits for TN4ALL stakeholders and community members on TN4ALL campaigns, issues, and events.
- Provides media training and coaching to TN4ALL leadership and members of the TN4ALL developed community tables, including creation of a Speaker Institute to train leaders to be effective media spokespeople.
- Works closely with comms staff of TN4ALL member organizations to promote coordinated messaging and strategies.
Other Duties and Responsibilities (5%)
- Performs other official duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience with organizing and advocacy campaigns.
- Experience with communications for organizing or electoral campaigns.
- Demonstrated commitment to justice and liberation for historically marginalized people.
- Ability to shape and/or reshape the narrative in the general public.
- Cultural competency that includes race, gender, gender identity, sexuality, ability, language, immigration, socioeconomics, etc.
- Knowledge of communications strategies and technology; ability to develop and implement effective strategic communications.
- At least 2-3 years of experience in communications and media relations connected to organizing or movement work.
- Ability to independently create clear and concise content across a broad range of technical and non-technical topics to a variety of audiences.
- Knowledge of current web trends and business practices, including social media strategy and user experience design; ability to stay up to date on industry trends and create effective web content.
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks; experience in planning and producing mid-to large-scale events.
- Experience developing a strategic communications plan for statewide or regional campaigns.
- Skill in copywriting and editing; ability to create concise copy.
- Ability to assess organization needs and develop strategies and provide consultation to meet those needs.
- Knowledge of and support for TN4ALL’ principles and demands.
- Ability to develop surveys and collect data to drive communications decisions.
- Knowledge of and ability to use various automated systems and software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word and PowerPoint), G-Suite, and Adobe products.
- Ability to quickly develop in-depth knowledge of education and racial justice policy issues, and proficiency speaking and writing about them.
- A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.
Travel
- Occasional travel is required.

Salary and Benefits
