Public Services Field Deputy Director

Based in the Portland / Salem, OR offices

 

SEIU Local 503 is a dynamic and growing union. Over the last 20 years we have tripled in size and are now the largest union in Oregon. Our union represents public employees including state, local and higher education workers and long-term care workers including homecare, nursing home, and facility-based workers. Our work to lift standards for working people has changed the lives of our members and Oregonians as a whole. We recently settled the best state, higher ed, homecare, and nursing home contracts in the country through a strategy that fuses member political action, policy and budget work, and deep member organizing. We are looking for someone to join our Public Services leadership team and help drive the work of raising standards for workers across Oregon.

The ideal candidate is someone who is highly motivated to make change for the multiracial workers and members who live in every corner of our state. Desired experience includes building multi-faceted campaigns that include member organizing and using electoral and legislative politics to build campaigns. The ideal candidate will integrate into our broader union leadership team and propel our union’s work to become an anti-racist organization alongside a dedicated group of staff and member leaders.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • With shared vision and purpose, we will drive organizational change and effectiveness through a focus on staff and team development, accountability, and equity and inclusion.
  • Supervise the daily work of internal organizers and coordinators.
  • Coordinate the orderly operation of all field organizing projects.
  • Participate in administrative and strategic planning for the Union.
  • Coordinate planning activities with staff organizers.
  • Implement policy decisions of the Union as they impact the Union’s Internal Field program.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience and demonstrated competence in all aspects of internal union organizing work.
  • Experience working with and developing member leaders and staff to lead campaigns.
  • Ability to hold self, staff, and leaders accountable to high standards of performance and integrity.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with other departments within the union.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and ability to build an organizing culture within the union.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice.
  • Working knowledge of applicable labor law, including PECBA, NLRA, FLSA, FMLA/OFLA/PLO, etc.

Working Environment:

☐ Group 1 - Requires performing instant or sustained arduous physical activity.
☒ Group 2 - Requires occasional lifting and exertion for short periods.
☐ Group 3 - Very Limited Physical Exertion

Office and field work involving travel to areas represented throughout the state and in a variety of environmental situations. The workweek is Monday through Friday plus weekend work when specifically assigned. The workday may begin before and extend beyond normal office hours depending on the demands of the assignment.

Pay and Benefits:
Director positions provide comprehensive fully paid health, dental and vision benefits for employee and eligible dependents, domestic partner benefits, generous holiday and vacation policies, a monthly car and cell phone allowance, and a 15% employer-paid defined contribution 401K. Compensation range is based on experience $96,660 – $124,692 annually.
