External Organizer
Based in Boston, MA
Purpose of Position:
To represent and assist in recruiting and organizing new bargaining units, including potential charter school employees, higher education employees, library staff, healthcare workers, etc. and implementing organizing goals of campaigns.
This position will involve building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned locations, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of members and activists.
This is a grant funded position.
This Position will report to the Director of Organization. Work assignments will be determined as needed to meet the goals of the AFT Massachusetts. The External Organizers will work with the Campaign Department.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts.
- Building one-on-one relationships with members or potential members and educating them about the issues.
- Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take proper actions.
- Coordinating with workers to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities for membership growth and mobilization.
- Conducting individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
- Identifying and developing worker leaders to guide and assist their efforts.
- Working to involve community allies in organizing campaigns.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in union or community organizing.
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Sharp communication skills
- Ability to motivate and activate others.
- Ability to create an effective work plan and follow through on it.
- Willingness to conduct home and site visits.
- The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, which may include nights and weekends depending on the needs of any campaign.
- Effective communication skills, basic writing, and computer skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: The position includes a generous salary and benefits package Starting salary range $86,572 - $150,151, in accord with the collective bargaining agreement with the AFT MA Professional Staff Union. Membership in the AFT MA Professional Staff Union is required within thirty (30) days of employment.
