Supervises: This position does not supervise staff.
Salary: $68,182.57 plus a generous benefit package.
Position Description
Under the supervision of the Organizing Director, this is a field staff position organizing new bargaining units and supporting the organizing objectives among existing units. The External Organizer will identify organizing targets, plan campaigns, recruit and mentor member leadership, win representation elections, and assist in the transition to collective bargaining. This position reports directly to the Organizing Director and/or Organizing Coordinator. This is a bargaining unit position.

SEIU Local 668 represents nearly 20,000 health and human services workers, including those who work as employment and youth counselors, social workers, corrections and probation officers, ChildLine and 911 operators, drug and alcohol counselors, and court employees, among others. Approximately half of our members are employed by the Commonwealth, and another 9,000 work for the municipal, county, and private employers across the state. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, of varying ethnicities, political affiliations, and beliefs, but they are united by their dedication to serving our constituents – the people of Pennsylvania.
Primary Responsibilities
The External Organizer will:
- Develop and lead organizing campaigns in a variety of industries. This involves identifying and researching potential targets, assessing contacts, building organizing committees, and preparing workers for sophisticated anti-union messaging.
- Plan and implement in-person and virtual worksite actions.
- Engage in one-on-one persuasion, inoculation, assessment and motivation of unorganized workers in house visits, at the worksite, and in meetings, clearly explaining the union and the organizing process to employees;
- Plan and conduct community outreach efforts in support of campaigns;
- Work with other union staff to help secure a first contract for newly organized units;
- Assist in representing the union and employees in administrative proceedings - i.e. election agreements and conferences / hearings, plus unfair labor practice charges - with the NLRB and PLRB;
- Use technology to conduct business, track information, and communicate. Special emphasis on VAN and Google suite;
- Other duties within the union as required.
External Organizer Qualifications:
Prior organizing experience or training is highly desirable; some experience with and commitment to social and economic justice is essential. In addition to labor / workplace actions, this may include political organizing, campus organizing, and community / grassroots organizing. Must be willing to travel extensively as-needed to support organizing campaigns.
- Sharp problem-solving skills, including the ability to exercise independent judgment in response to unforeseeable situations;
- Ability to design and implement campaigns;
- Leadership skills;
- Deep commitment to organized labor;
- Knowledge of the labor movement and applicable practices and laws;
- Strong written and oral communication skills across various media;
- Ability to work long and irregular hours and visit members at their homes, worksites, and other locations as needed;
- Ability to travel and/or relocate for extended periods of time;
- Heavy travel, weekend and evening work required and the possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license;
- Preference will be given to applicants living in Southeast Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia metro area.
