Communications Coordinator

Based in Newark, NJ

 

CWA Local 1037 is seeking a Communications Coordinator who will assist in developing a coordinated communications strategy to support the goals of the union through new worker organizing, internal member organizing, issue based and legislative campaigns, media relations, and member communications. The ideal candidate should be able to work both independently and in teams and handle multiple assignments meeting quality standard and specific deadlines.

We are an organization of workers, led by elected Shop Stewards, where members understand that we, collectively, are the Union. We organize together and are actively engaged in contesting for power at our workplaces and in our communities. Our Union is an active part of the broader movement for workers’ rights and for the advancement of the working class. We fight to protect services that make our communities stronger, in alliance and solidarity with those individuals and organizations with whom we share common goals.

We represent public workers employed by the State in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren Counties as well as the NJ Water Supply Authority, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and the Passaic County Board of Social Services. We also represent in-home childcare providers, childcare center workers, community care residential providers and workers at direct care and other non-profit organizations across the state, such as Bergen’s Promise, Essex County ARC, and New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and executing a coordinated communications strategy
  • Visit worksites to understand the work done by members in developing a communication strategy
  • Work with Staff Representatives and Shop Stewards on how communications with members
  • Maintain and update website
  • Work directly with staff to develop content for website, newsletters and online communications
  • Online Communications/Social Media
  • Action Network/Other E-mail Tools
  • Create flyers, newsletters, campaign material, and other printed materials
  • Press releases/media relations
  • Internal and External communications

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  • BA or BS in relevant field. Equivalent experience may be submitted.
  • At least 2 to 3 years communications experience for a labor, political or issue-advocacy organization or campaign;
  • Excellent written and oral skills;
  • Commitment to, and understanding of, the labor movement, social justice, and related issues;
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team;
  • Comfortable speaking before groups;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks/campaigns at one time;
  • Ability to work long and extended hours including weekends;
  • Demonstrated ability to use email marketing/advocacy tools such as Action Network or Mail Chimp;
  • Demonstrated understanding and use of social media and online tools, such as Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, YouTube;
  • Experience in writing press releases and media relations;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Experience working with database tools such as MS Access;
  • Experience with graphic design and video editing software

Writing sample is required.

Preferred

  • Spanish fluency;
  • Experience working with a labor union or worker based organization;
  • Familiarity with politics, public sector unionism, and labor law in New Jersey;
