NY State Worker Outreach Organizer

Based within 30 miles of Rochester, Buffalo, or Syracuse, NY

The United Farm Workers is currently recruiting enthusiastic and skilled organizers to join the Farm Worker Movement in New York State and kick off new campaigns aimed at enhancing the lives of farm workers throughout NY (Current Locations: – Within 30 miles of Rochester, Buffalo, or Syracuse).

Summary:
The NY State Worker Outreach Organizer will focus on organizing farm workers to have the UFW advocate for them through collective bargaining agreements. Working under the guidance of the Organizing Coordinator, this role involves planning, promoting, and facilitating UFW membership growth by empowering farm workers. This is NOT an office job and does require traveling throughout the state and potentially internationally. Please submit a cover letter along with your résumé.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct personal visits, hold house meetings, and organize general meetings in New York State as well as traveling to sending communities abroad such as Mexico and Jamaica.
  • Recruit and develop worker leaders to establish a union at their workplace.
  • Build connections with local community, labor, political, and religious leaders.
  • Ensure that worker rights are upheld through actions and by engaging with governmental agencies.
  • Work with worker leaders and negotiating committee to develop plans and bargaining proposals.
  • Maintain and document worker information in a database (VAN).
  • Conduct card check elections.
  • Obtains industry knowledge and density to increase bargaining power.
  • Use innovative strategies to sign the first contract

QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION:

  • Previous organizing experience is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Ability to drive and put in long and irregular hours, including weekends, early mornings, and evenings as necessary.
  • Strong computer and technology skills are preferred (Microsoft Office, Excel, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Internet, Social Media).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance
  • Ability to identify and develop worker leadership
  • A strong dedication to the mission of the Farm Worker Movement.
  • Proficiency in both Spanish and English, in speaking and writing.
  • A valid driver’s license, current passport, and a reliable vehicle are required.

COMPENSATION:
The salary ranges from Salary of $63,000 - $65,000 a year. Benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, pension, 401k, 12 paid holidays, 48 hours of sick pay & paid vacations.
