Political Director / Campaign Coordinator

Based in Baltimore, MD

 

The Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual to serve as our Political Director/Campaign Coordinator. The applicant should have organizing experience (legislative, electoral, labor, community, volunteer, or other types), be passionate about helping working people, and be able to work independently.

This position reports directly to the President but will work closely with the council’s executive board. The Political Director/Campaign Coordinator will also collaborate with the Maryland State & District of Columbia AFL-CIO and four central labor councils in Maryland.

This position is based out of our headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland but it allows for some remote work when deemed appropriate by the President. Candidates must live in or plan to relocate to the region

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting CLC/Zone level political organizing for local races endorsed by the CLC and for state races endorsed by the Maryland State & D.C. AFL-CIO
  • Building and maintaining relationships with rank-and-file members and local union leaders.
  • Mobilizing union members and assisting with rallies, pickets, strikes, and other labor actions.
  • Collaborating with affiliate unions and their members on engagement, volunteer recruitment, and training.
  • Growing union local and member engagement in labor council programs, activities, and priorities through grassroots organizing and member engagement, including developing and coordinating education and leadership training programs, strategic legislative and issue campaigns, and strike support actions.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate team-building exercises among affiliates.
  • Attend various coalition meetings.
  • Provide other legislative support as required.
  • Regularly attend labor council meetings.
  • Assist organizers in local unions.
  • Provide development, support, and coordination of political programming during municipal elections.
  • Develop and lead trainings on various topics related to leadership development and organizing.
  • Occasional data management.
  • Assist with labor council programs and priorities as needed (e.g., Workers Memorial Day, Labor Day events, lobby days, conferences, etc.).
  • Assist Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO officers as needed on special projects.
  • Ensure effective internal and external communications, including media and publications of the organization.
  • Grow affiliation with the organization, including maintaining the participation of existing affiliates and reaching out to new potential affiliates.
  • Prepare and submit regular ad hoc reports as requested.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Have a minimum of three (3) years of experience with organizing. The experience may consist of legislative, electoral, labor, community, or other types of organizing (volunteer experience included).
  • Have a working understanding of the labor movement and its structure in Baltimore and the State of Maryland.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills and proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Have strong computer skills and proficiency with Canva, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite; LAN/VAN and Action Network experience preferred
  • Have a demonstrated work ethic.
  • Have the ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Have a commitment to the labor movement and to advancing economic & social justice.
  • Proven abilities with fundraising and event planning.
  • Must be able to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment and have flexibility on nights and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel on a regular basis as needed throughout the region.

Compensation
Salary range is $70,000 - $80,000 based on skills and experience. This position also includes a generous benefits package, including high quality health, dental, and vision insurance, vacation days and sick days. This is a one-year position with potential for an extension.
