Building Trades Business Representative

The Building & Construction Trades Council of Alameda County represents (22) Construction Unions having jurisdiction in Alameda County. The Council’s Affiliated Unions represent approximately 35,000+ workers, living and working in the County. In addition, the Council represents over 600 craft workers in Public Sector agencies.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Building Trades Business Representative will report to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Council.
Primary Job duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Represent affiliate members in Public Sector agencies by negotiating contracts & handling grievances.
- Managing the implementation of Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) including: organizing meetings, tracking projects, assisting with grievances, etc.
- Prepare background materials and research for the negotiations of PLAs.
- Assist with campaigns for good construction jobs resulting in PLAs.
- Assist with the political campaigns of the Council.
- Assist in organizing Building Trades Council events and programs.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a Labor Management Apprenticeship Program (JATC) or a B.A. degree in related field
- Two or more years’ experience with unions and/or the construction industry highly preferred.
- Good writing, communication, and effective organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills. Knowledge of website development and social media, a plus.
- Ability to work effectively with others and take instruction from various supervisors.
- Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines.
- Reliable car and driver’s license.
- Experience in political campaigns, a plus.
- Passion for and commitment to supporting workers’ rights and trade unions.
The Business Representative will be a direct employee of the Building & Construction Trades Council of Alameda County with an office, regular responsibilities, and hours. The position offers a competitive salary based on experience along with a competitive benefits package. The Business Representative will be expected to work both regular daytime hours, attend evening meetings and weekend events. This position does not allow a work from home option.
