LAANE
Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy

Climate Campaign Co-Director

Based in Los Angeles, CA

The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) has been at the forefront of the economic justice movement in L.A. for over 25 years. LAANE combines organizing, research, communications, and policy development and leads broad-based labor, community, and environmental coalitions. LAANE has been a national leader in fighting for living wages, community benefit agreements, and continues to advocate for policies and programs that benefit low-wage workers, BIPOC and low-income communities, and the environment.

LAANE is currently seeking a full-time, experienced Co-Director for a campaign that focuses on building collective power to fight for climate justice. We work with community, environmental and environmental justice, and labor allies, including the LA/OC Building Trades Council, IBEW Local 11 and Local 18, and UTLA. Together, we seek to achieve a union-made, renewable energy and water-secure future for Los Angeles that invests in equitable access to good jobs and benefits for frontline communities. This is an exciting opportunity to work in sectors undergoing major transformation, and that will be in the spotlight as the state works to meet its climate goals. The campaign seeks to ensure that LA’s public infrastructure, like schools and our utilities, act with urgency to make the climate investments we need as quickly, cleanly, and equitably as possible. The campaign will also deepen its coalition-supported and community-driven approach by cultivating a base of parent and community members in working-class communities across Los Angeles.

Position Responsibilities: The Campaign Co-Director is responsible for working closely with their fellow Climate Co-Director on:

  • Supervision of the LAANE team, including community/coalition organizers, researchers, and communication specialists as well as consultants;

  • Developing new initiatives;
  • Leading campaign planning and goal setting;
  • Managing the project budget and working with LAANE executive team to develop and carry out fundraising strategies to fund the project, as well as maintaining regular communication with key funders;
  • Working with community organizers to grow and maintain a diverse coalition of community leaders, environmentalists, and labor;
  • Working closely with unions, environmental, and environmental justice organizations to implement a climate resiliency strategy;
  • As a member of the management team, helping set the organization’s direction.
  • Supporting with grant applications and reports; participating in LAANE's private fundraising events.
  • Participating in and helping to lead organizational actions and events.
  • Building a base of working-class parents and community members to envision and demand equitable investment and community ownership of climate solutions at community schools

Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to economic justice and the labor movement. Also needed: willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary and ability to work independently. Skills:

  • More than two years of experience in supervising and leading a team;
  • Experience running an advocacy campaign, developing and implementing a campaign plan;
  • Strong community outreach, organizing, and engagement skills;
  • Understanding or interest in public sector utilities is a plus.
  • Experience working on environmental issues and with labor unions is strongly preferred;
  • Driving your car required;

Terms of Employment: This is a full-time position with a salary of $85,000. LAANE offers 100% Employer Paid Family Medical, Dental, and Vision, and a 401(k). LAANE is a qualified federal student loan forgiveness employer.

Generous paid time off, including 12 personal days, eight observed holidays, and three floating holidays each year. LAANE has a paid, two-week winter break at the end of each year. Employees can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 12 sick days annually. After 5 years of work, all staff can apply for 3 months of paid sabbatical leave.

The position is not a 9 to 5 job; it requires work on nights and weekends, and there is an expectation to support LAANE’s broader work via collective actions.
