Assistant General Counsel

Based in Washington, DC

 

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association, AFL-CIO ("NATCA"), the labor union representing federal-sector and private-sector air traffic controllers and other aviation safety professionals, has an immediate opening for an Assistant General Counsel in its Washington, D.C. headquarters office.

The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for: (1) assisting the General Counsel with researching, formulating, and providing legal guidance and advice to NATCA’s leadership; (2) representing the organization in federal and state litigation and administrative proceedings; (3) ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act by providing counsel to the Union’s leadership, staff, and locals on issues such as financial reporting, dishonesty bond coverage, union elections, internal grievances, trusteeships, and member rights; (4) drafting and reviewing various commercial contracts, including hotel and event contracts, employment contracts, commercial leases, licensing agreements, separation agreements, confidentiality agreements, consulting retainers, and other commercial and transactional matters; (5) providing guidance and counsel to NATCA’s leadership on non-labor relations matters including, but not limited to, questions of defamation, trademark protection, insurance coverage, privacy requirements, member benefits, and the legal structure of related business entities; and (6) assisting with developing and implementing internal employment practices and policies.

Applicants for the Assistant General Counsel position should have at least two or more years of relevant post-law school experience.

Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and knowledge of federal labor and employment laws, including the Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act. Applicants should also possess excellent legal research and writing skills, be extremely well organized, and capable of handling multiple assignments with minimal supervision. Applicants should be admitted to the District of Columbia bar; if not already admitted, admission will be required within one year of the date of hire.

The pay band for this position is $105,000 to $165,000. NATCA offers employer-paid health, dental, vision, long-term and short-term disability insurance; a defined benefit retirement plan, a 401(k), transit benefits, and a hybrid work schedule.
