Position Type: Full-time, Project-Based
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) local affiliate in Washington, DC, is seeking a Union Organizer to support an ongoing organizing campaign. This is a full-time project-based position focused on building power for educators and school staff through effective organizing strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Organize and mobilize workers to build strong unions and improve working conditions.
- Conduct one-on-one conversations with potential members to encourage union membership.
- Develop workplace leaders and build representative organizing committees of workers.
- Work with organizing committees to plan and implement member-to-member outreach campaigns.
- Attend regular team meetings to discuss strategy, progress, and next steps.
- Maintain an updated database by entering assessments and other collected data.
- Occasionally, be willing to travel within the state or country as required for meetings or trainings.
- Take direction from the campaign director and local/state union leaders to achieve membership and organizing goals.
Qualifications:
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities and individuals.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Competency in basic computer/web functions and social media platforms.
- Motivated, responsible, organized, professional, and detail oriented.
- Passionate about social and economic justice and equitable access to high-quality education.
- Ability to work independently while incorporating feedback from supervisors.
- At least 1 year of experience in labor or community organizing (preferred).
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle (preferred but not required).
