Strategic Campaigner

UNITE HERE Local 274 is hiring a Strategic Campaigner to work full time in Philadelphia, PA. This position is 100% in-person (no remote work).

UNITE HERE Local 274 is the union of housekeepers, cooks, servers and other food service and hospitality industry workers in the Philadelphia area. We currently represent 4,000 members and we are committed to organizing the thousands more nonunion hospitality workers in our region. Recent campaigns include a historic set of strikes of Aramark’s food and beverage operations at all three Philadelphia Sports stadiums; organizing a majority of the food service workers at Philadelphia International Airport, where many workers have more than tripled their annual income; and successfully advocating for the passage of multiple cutting edge worker protection laws at the local level. UNITE HERE Local 274 is dedicated to raising the standard of living for hospitality industry workers; fighting racism, xenophobia, sexism, and homophobia in the workplace and in our society; and transforming the economy by building a strong, worker-led labor movement.

This position consists of providing strategic support to the union’s organizing campaigns by:

• Conducting interviews and surveying workers to document workplace issues,
• Collaborating with worker leaders and organizing staff to identify strategic opportunities,
• Performing corporate research on hospitality industry employers, real estate developers, private equity firms and other investors,
• Designing and supporting union actions such as strikes, pickets, press conferences, rallies and civil disobedience actions,
• Communicating the union’s message by building relationships with journalists, pitching stories to the press, preparing workers to give speeches and testimony, developing communications materials, and interacting with customers,
• Developing legislative policies that improve working conditions and enhance workers’ bargaining power,
• Building political power and advancing the union’s agenda by lobbying elected officials, organizing community allies and participating in the union’s electoral program.

Desired Qualifications include:

• Strong writing skills,
• Curiosity, creativity, and an eagerness to learn new things and meet new people,
• Willingness to work long and sometimes irregular hours while managing competing priorities and deadlines,
• A demonstrated commitment to fighting for social justice,
• Ability to develop strong relationships with a diverse group of workers, staff and allies,
• Proficiency with a computer.
• Past experience in organizing, journalism, policy development or another field which requires related skills is a plus,
• Proficiency or fluency in Spanish, Amharic, Bangla and/or French is also a plus.

Salary and Benefits: All compensation is approved by the membership of the union and salary levels are generally commensurate with our members’ annual income. Entry level salary is $46,020/year plus comprehensive benefits package valued at over $40,000/year for family medical coverage. Benefits include pension, free family medical, dental, vision insurance all at no cost to the employee as well as a generous paid time off policy.
