ROLE:
Local 73 is looking for a skilled, experienced, and committed Human Resources Director to develop and implement human resources strategies, policies and programs, including but not limited to: Employee relations, onboarding, orientation, professional training and development, compensation, benefits, health and safety, health insurance and employee services. Local 73 currently has over 75 employees, covering two states with four field offices. The HR Director will be a key member of the Local 73 management team and will report directly to the Chief of Staff.
KEY DUTIES:
- Formulates and executes HR strategies, policies, and objectives both independently and as part of the management team.
- Determines and recommends employee relations best practices to establish a positive employee/employer relationship and promote a high level of staff success and morale.
- Identifies all applicable legal requirements and government reporting regulations (such as FLSA, OSHA, EEO, ERISA, FMLA, ADA etc.) and ensures Local compliance. May act as primary contact with outside agencies.
- Maximizes utilization of HR software and databases.
- Oversees benefits programs and serves as the main contact person for providers.
- Tracks staff development and performance assessments.
- Leads onboarding and orientation process.
- Spearheads the union’s recruitment and retention strategy.
- Monitors Local programs for effectiveness and cost containment.
- Maintains personnel records and database.
- Creates a workplace environment that fosters an inclusive team culture and draws on strength of the diversity of the staff.
- As part of a team, establishes compensation policies, staff development programs and employee evaluation systems.
- Ensures that employees are kept aware of personnel policies and employee benefit programs on a continuing basis.
- Engages in workforce planning and succession planning to foster “promotion from within” capability.
- May act as the Local’s Ethics Liaison, responsible for training and enforcement of the SEIU International Union’s Ethics Policy and Program.
- Serves on the Local 73 Labor Management Committee and participates in collective bargaining with the staff union.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5-10 years of HR experience with increasing responsibility over time.
- A demonstrated commitment to the Labor movement and the fight for racial, social, economic justice.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Broad knowledge of employment practices including compensation, benefits, employee relations, training and development.
- Experience with grievance resolution and mediation.
- Strong management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working for a labor union, government agency or mission driven non-profit a big plus.
- Experience working in a unionized workplace is also a plus.
- PHR or SHRM certification is an advantage.
- A demonstrated ability to form working relationships with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds.
The work setting for this position is primarily in-office, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work. The demands of the job aren’t physical in nature but may require lifting up to 25 pounds and walking for up to two miles during occasional election and lobbying related events.
The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000 annually, and the job comes with substantial benefits, including a $7,200 annual combined car/phone allowance, paid holidays and vacations, fully paid health insurance benefits, and a defined benefit pension plan fully paid by the employer. Local 73 does not pay relocation expenses.
