University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE-CWA 9119) is searching for a talented, hard-working individual committed to building a powerful and democratic union. The successful candidate for this position will be values-driven, self-motivated and resourceful, with the skills, experience, and enthusiasm to drive key elements of the Union’s organizing program. This is a Senior Staff position responsible for assisting in the overall development and implementation of UPTE’s strategic, organizational plans, while embracing UPTE’s principles, values, and culture.
UPTE-CWA represents more than 20,000 employees working in healthcare, research and technical jobs at the University of California, Lawrence Berkeley Lab, Lawrence Livermore Lab and Los Alamos National Lab as well as adjunct faculty at Butte Community College, College of Sequoias and Mount San Jacinto Community College. Key responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Executive Director, design and implement campaigns to recruit and develop leaders and members and win victories on key organizing, contract, political, workplace, and community fights
- Work with Executive Director, staff, officers, and member leaders to build a strong unionwide workplace leadership structure
- Play a lead role in campus, regional, and statewide planning
- Take leadership on high priority issue campaigns and strategic initiatives
- Attend weekly meetings to plan and evaluate progress
- Plan and drive new organizing drives, develop organizing committees, and anchor comprehensive campaigns elements
- Manage internal organizing staff, training, and evaluating staff on implementing a rigorous model for membership, leadership, development, education and driving key fights of the union
- Engage hands on in the day to day work of staff organizers
- Train staff organizers on key skills such as organizing conversations, leadership development, and campaign planning and implementation, including modeling those skills in hands on organizing work
- Hold thorough 1:1s to review staff priorities, goals, turf, leaders, and progress
- Communicate objectives, strategic plans and goals to staff and leaders
- Develop and implement support plans for performance improvement
- Management performance and progressive discipline in conjunction with Executive Director when deemed necessary
- Create and manage field campaign materials
- Track membership engagement metrics as key performance indicators
- Develop and implement staff training programs,
- Assessment and implementation, manage contact lists, manage field calls
- Identify and develop leadership roles for UPTE activists
- Design and implement membership training and education programs to develop leaders
- Work with staff organizers to develop curriculum, create and implement regular and ongoing worksite leadership training
- Develop more advanced training programs for Unit Representatives and top leaders on each campus
- Work with organizing staff to undertake workplace leader skills assessment and individualized training and development plans
Qualifications:
- Strong commitment to the labor movement
- Minimum of 3 years leading organizing campaigns (can be new organizing, internal organizing; or comparable organizing drives
- Experience working with, building and sustaining diverse coalition of membership groups
- Experience developing and driving escalating comprehensive organizing campaigns
- Demonstrated grit and tenacity to bring difficult campaigns to success
- Familiarity and experience working with public-sector unions is preferred;
- Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills
- Experience independently managing projects
- Experience managing employees is preferred
Compensation: Starting salary range of $130,000 – $160,000 commensurate with experience, and an excellent benefits package including a defined benefit pension, all university holidays, auto allowance, and flexible work arrangements.
