Union Overview:
The unionization effort at Alphabet has its roots in a long history of worker organizing dating back to the early days of Google. Today, CWA Local 9009 is a strong and growing union representing over 1,300 members across the United States and Canada. We have a bold vision: to organize every Google worker—full-time, part-time, Temporary Workers, Contractors, and Vendors (TVCs). As a democratic, member-led union, we are deeply committed to economic and social justice. We are strongly focused on building a cohesive and unified team that advances the union’s priorities and improves the working lives of our members.
Job Description:
CWA Local 9009 is seeking a highly experienced, responsible union professional with a proven track record of growing membership and increasing member engagement in a union setting. The Director of Organizing (Director) is an exempt, management-level position that reports to the Union Executive Board. The Director oversees a nation-wide team of eight union organizers and one communications coordinator, and leads strategic, integrated pre-majority direct-join organizing campaigns. This role requires regular travel across the continental US to foster a cohesive and unified staff and cultivate member leaders.
This position is responsible for developing and implementing the union’s strategic organizing plan. This includes creating work plans, setting clear goals and metrics, and developing systems to support staff organizers and foster leadership development. The Director also oversees member grievances and legal matters, facilitates issue resolution, and collaborates closely with the union’s operations staff. Ensuring clear and consistent communication between the Executive Board, member leaders, and staff is a key part of the role. Additionally, the Director makes personnel recommendations to the Executive Board (e.g., hiring, firing, discipline, promotions) and manages the organizing budget. This role requires extremely strong judgment, leadership, and a deep commitment to advancing the union’s vision and goals.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of accomplishment in the following competency areas:
- Strategic Planning and Campaign Implementation
- Lead the development and execution of strategic organizing campaigns, including issue assessment and prioritization, campaign development and evaluation of progress toward goals.
- Identify opportunities for organizational growth, including key pressure points that strengthen the union’s power and advance our long-term objectives—particularly winning union recognition and achieving meaningful bargaining power.
- Leadership, Staff Development and Management
- Inspire and motivate staff and member leaders with a clear, enthusiastic vision.
- Develop and implement strategies to engage members and foster leadership at all levels of the organization.
- Align staff work with the union’s goals and ensure accountability through structured work planning, training, supervision, ongoing support, and professional development.
- Collaboration with Union Leadership
- Provide strategic guidance, training, and assistance to the Executive Board.
- Make effective recommendations on personnel matters, including hiring, retention, discipline, dismissal, and promotion.
- Commitment to Advancing Social Justice and Equity
- Demonstrate a strong, ongoing commitment to advancing justice, equity, and inclusion across all aspects of the union’s work and culture.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in a member-led union organizing environment.
- At least 5 years of supervisory experience managing organizing staff within a labor union setting.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, plan effectively, and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
- Proven experience in strategic campaign planning and implementation; and driving significant membership growth.
- Extremely strong knowledge of labor law and union recruitment strategies, particularly pre-majority and direct-join organizing models, is highly preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead teams, collaborate across diverse groups, and work independently.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively across the continental U.S. and Canada to meet with and build relationships with union staff and members. Preference will be given to candidates based near concentrations of Alphabet/Google workers.
- Outstanding verbal, written, and social communication skills.
- High proficiency with digital communication and productivity tools, including (but not limited to):
- Microsoft Office
- Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar, etc.)
- Dropbox
- Airtable
- CRM databases and platforms
- Calendly
- Zoom
- Signal
- Discord
- Hustle
- Expense reporting software
- Must possess valid identification, a driver’s license, and a reliable, insured vehicle for business use.
- Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
Salary, Benefits, and Location
- This is a hybrid position, based in New York, the Bay Area, Seattle, or another location with a high concentration of Alphabet/Google workers. Regular travel is required.
- The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $145,000, commensurate with experience.
